Event Data Recorders
All passenger vehicles equipped with airbags have an airbag control computer, often referred to as a "black box". The primary function of the airbag computer is to deploy the airbags when necessary. As a bonus feature, it may also record some useful electronic crash data such as pre-impact speed, but the data must be carefully analyzed and interpreted. The crash data may also be volatile. The data can be very useful in cases of alleged unintended acceleration, airbag malfunction and fraud, for example.
Commercial vehicles may also have the capability of recording crash data. Companies managing a fleet of commercial vehicles may also have GPS logs that can contain useful information. Cyclists sometime use a bicycle computer that can record useful data.
If you are unsure whether the vehicles involved in one of your claims have some electronic crash data, give our accident reconstruction experts a phone call.
